how stuff works - pop rocks!
A little Sunday surfing led to me running across U.S. Patent No. 4,289,794 on:
Gasified candy which produces a more pronounced popping sensation is prepared by maintaining a sugar melt at a temperature of below about 280 degree fahrenheit. during gasification. This product contains observable gas bubbles with a majority of the large bubbles having a diameter greater than about 225 microns which is substantially larger than those in the gasified candy produced heretofore.
In other words – Pop Rocks!
What’s even more amazing (other than the fact I spent the time searching for more information) – a website, Oculon.org, has taken the time to explain the whole Pop Rocks experience – including the speed and force produced as the candy expands in your mouth.
Now – if I only had the guts to drink soda and eat Pop Rocks at the same time.
Poor Mikey – he really would eat anything.
