inaugural phosita screencast

WoohooDrum-roll please……………

I now have the pleasure of introducing you to the inaugural PHOSITA screencast – otherwise known as a PHOSITAcast!

What is a screencast, you ask?

Simply put: a screencast is a multimedia file that combines video and audio.  The video is a users computer “screen” and the resulting file is broad”cast” over the Web.  For information, see Jon Udell’s screencast del.icio.us links. A screencast is like a podcast with the added video component.

Our first screencast is a demonstration of the PHOSITA website and its capabilities – it is short (approximately 5 minutes) and requires that your browser have flash installed.  In the future, regular readers of PHOSITA will be provided with training and information screencasts on intellectual property topics — for example, how to use the USPTO website, how to file a trademark application etc.

The software we are using to create this screencast is a trial version of Camtasia Studio by TechSmith Software. So far, I really like this piece of software – very easy to use, intuitive and fairly powerful.  I can export the files as Windows Media, Quicktime, AVI or Flash format and I can easily set the dimensions and quality of the resulting file.  Camtasia also integrates with PowerPoint and will turn any PowerPoint presentation into a “movie-like” experience with recorded audio.  Camtasia Studio is a bit expensive (US $299), however, the ease of use and its powerful capabilities appear to make it well worth the investment.

So without further ado, I give you the inaugural PHOSITA screencast. (Flash required – 7MB file)

I would appreciate any comments you have with respect to topics for discussion, technical issues, cool add-ons etc.  Drop ideas into the comments and I will approve them as quickly as possible!

FYI – stay tuned for a wicked cool announcement next week! I promise, you don’t want to miss it.

Very cool Doug. I can certainly see the applications and expect to see more sceencasts on other blogs.

I don't which is more telling though; you having the time to broadcast the screencast or me having the time to watch it. I was not able to bill the time though, were you?

The "inaugural PHOSITA screencast" did not work while running Firefox 1.0.1. I have had problems with Flash and FF before.
