Biodegradable Gum Patented This Week

Chicago Business reports Wrigley Patents Biodegradable Gum.
I certainly don't know how it could work. If gum doesn't break down with the heat and mastication of a typical mouth, how can it break down in the environment? Maybe the diagram to the right explains it to some, but I'm still mystified.
If you would like to see the entire patent for biodegradable gum, look here (html) or here (pdf).
According to the article, Wrigley also has patents on anti-impotence gum and caffeine-based gum. However, the company has yet to market either. Jolt, on the other hand, does sell caffeine gum.
Just when you thought gum was just gum, along comes the newest development in gum technology. Of course, everyone knows about nicotine gum, but did you know there is asperin gum, sugar blocker gum, and vitamin gum (among others). For more on gum as a drug delivery system, visit Gum Base Co..
Now, if they could just create a gum that keeps its flavor . . .
