what's a patent worth?

From Forbes.com:

Shares of NVE Corp., a maker of sensor chips for computers, shot up more than 20 percent Tuesday morning after the company said it expects to receive approval for a key memory patent by the end of the day.

The company said the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office notified it that the patent for "antiparallel magnetoresitive memory cells" will be issued on Tuesday.

Shares rose $6.86, or 21.7 percent, to $38.52 in late morning trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market. [Up to 40.12 as of 1:18 EST 8/17/04 -- ed.]

The patent covers a type of magnetic random access memory, or MRAM, that is more stable than previous versions. NVE said MRAM, which uses nanotechnology to store data, has the potential to combine the speed of SRAM (static random access memory), the density of DRAM (dynamic random access memory), and the non-volatility of Flash memory.

Pretty substantial bump in stock price on news that a patent has been issued on a technology.  Is there any dispute that IP is becoming more and more visible on the radar screens of investors?
