patent searching tutorial reference site

The McKinney Engineering Library at the University of Texas (Austin) has a really nice and informative tutorial on patent searching available here.

Why Perform a Patent Search?

The reasons for performing a patent search are many. The most obvious is to determine whether or not you can get a patent or if your invention has already been patented. Other reasons include:

  • getting a general idea of how an application and patent is structured to help in the preparation or your own application

  • learning more about a new field

  • for market information

  • competitor tracking

  • technology tracking

In addition to the patent searching tutorial, the library also offers several other reference pages on patents and trademarks.  Good site to bookmark for inventors and a great resource for IP attorneys to share with their clients.
