PRESIDENT BUSH'S BUDGET PATENT FRIENDLY

PRESIDENT BUSH'S BUDGET PATENT FRIENDLY

According to the Washington Post, President Bush's proposed budget would permit the office to keep all of the patent fees it collects in 2005, allowing the agency to hire 900 new patent examiners to help with a backlog of nearly 500,000 applications.

The diversion of fees paid to the PTO to fund ofentimes pork barrel projects has infuriated inventors and corporations that most pay significant fees in order to have a patent application examined.  One research group has even gone so far as to call the diversion the "Invention Tax".
